Cross-Links To Other Funding Council Projects

The AHRC’s recent funding of the Portus in the Roman Mediterranean project has made possible the awarding of further funds from the British School at Rome and the British Academy, as well as support from the Soprintendenza Speciale per I Beni Archeologici di Roma. The technological components of the Portus Project have also stimulated further research and funding opportunities.  These have included work on innovative forms of digital imaging (Reflectance Transformation Imaging), methods for managing research data and linking it to publications (JISC IDMB), and novel approaches for bringing digital methods into the fieldwork environment (RCUK DE PATINA).  Ongoing studies seek to place Portus in its Mediterranean context, including research into the commercial maritime links between Portus and other ports (funded from a variety of sources including the University of Southampton), mediated through network analysis and focused on ceramic data (drawing upon the AHRB-funded project Roman Amphorae: A Digital Resource). Three Southampton PhD projects support this work in areas as diverse as agent-based modelling and network analysis, movement of ceramic artefacts, and the semantic web.
