Archaeological computing at Portus
The fieldwork at Portus is generating large amounts of data from the survey, excavation and finds recording. The management of all of this information is key to creating a sound analysis, and a clear understanding of the site that is easily accessible. The Portus Project uses a computerized recording system (ARK) that integrates site records, finds information, and GPS data. As far as possible records collected in the field are ‘born digital’, enabling rapid and consistent recording.
In addition to conventional context and finds records, all objects will be available as laser scans or as fully scaled interactive 2D images (polynomial texture maps) and computer graphics. The system makes available the whole site archive (plans, sections, finds databases and digital assets) to all project members via a project intranet, as well as facilitating data archiving and eventual dissemination via the Archaeology Data Service. Standing structures are being recorded volumetrically by high-precision laser scanners, image rectification and conventional building survey techniques.
