Reconstruction Methodology – Portico di Claudio & Warehouses

Portico di Claudio

The character and extent of this structure can be traced on the ground, since a number of the columns still survive. The roofing of the portico is more of a challenge, given the unusual nature of the colonnade and the fact that the building to the west has never been the subject of a proper study. The suggested reconstruction of a gently inclined portico roof draws upon Gismondi's rendition of the structure in his model in the Museo della Via Ostiense. The layout and appearance of the warehouses (magazzini) at Portus are different to those at Ostia. Since there are relatively few standing walls at Portus, their external appearance is unknown. However, those stretches of wall that do survive suggest that the outer façade of the warehouses at ground floor level was characterize by large arched bays. Many would have had at least one other storey, but nothing is know about the external appearance of these. Consequently, we have followed the example of Gisimondi in the model in the Museo della Via Ostiense and represented the warehouses as arched arcades at ground and first floor levels. Nothing is known about the means of roofing and a tiled surface is assumed.
